A BETTER SERVER ADDRESS

A tiny detail that makes
your server feel established.

A memorable address makes it easier for players to join, share your server in Discord, and find their way back after a long break.

01

Premium means portable.

Connect your domain to any Minecraft host today, then move hosts later without changing the address players know.

Best for communities that plan to grow
02

Free is a great launchpad.

Subdomains cost nothing and get you playing quickly. They’re ideal for testing a new server or a close-knit group.

Great for starting out
03

Know the trade-off.

Some free providers require DNS setup or manual approval. Their address remains under the provider’s domain, not yours.

MADE FOR MINECRAFT

One name. Any server address.

Once you own a domain, point it to your Minecraft server with an A record and an SRV record—the address stays clean for your players.

YOUR MINECRAFT DOMAIN, EXPLAINED

Choose an address
players can actually keep.

Your domain is the sign above your server’s door. It appears in YouTube descriptions, Discord announcements, voting sites, staff applications, server lists, and screenshots. A good one is short enough to type on a phone, easy to say out loud, and distinctive enough that a returning player remembers it months later.

For most serious servers, .com is the safest default. Players recognise it instantly, it feels trustworthy, and it works for survival worlds, SMPs, networks, modpacks, and creator communities. .gg makes the gaming context obvious, while extensions such as .world, .team, and .online can create a strong brand when the exact .com is unavailable.

What a domain actually does for Minecraft

Every Minecraft server has a technical IP address and port. A domain lets you replace that forgettable string with something like play.embercraft.com. With a standard A record, the domain points at your server IP. An SRV record can quietly handle a non-standard port, so players can simply type the clean address rather than play.embercraft.com:25577. Your hosting provider will normally show the exact values to paste into DNS.

This separation matters. Your server can move from one hosting company to another, scale to a new machine, or change ports without forcing every player to learn a new address. You update the DNS once; your community keeps using the same familiar name.

FREE ADDRESSES: THE HONEST VERSION

Free can be excellent—just know what you are accepting.

A free Minecraft address is usually a subdomain provided by a host, such as yourserver.provider-domain.com. It can be perfect for a casual realm, a test server, or a first project. There is no reason to pay for a domain before you know you will use it. The important limitation is ownership: the provider controls the parent domain and its terms. If that provider closes the program, changes a policy, or you later switch services, you may need to give players a new address.

Some free options are different: they issue a domain-like name but require you to bring your own DNS. These can be flexible, but they may need nameserver changes, record configuration, or manual approval. We label these paths so you can choose the right amount of effort.

NAME IDEAS THAT AGE WELL

Keep it short, clear, and easy to share.

Try one or two real words, a world name, or a clear community theme: EmberCraft, BirchHaven, VoidVale, Blockworks, or Northstar SMP. Avoid long strings of numbers, difficult spellings, and names that only make sense to the first few friends who join. If you run multiple game modes, choose a broad name rather than putting a temporary mode in the domain.

Before claiming, say it out loud and send it to a friend without context. If they can type it correctly, you have probably found a good one. Then reserve it before another server does.

MINECRAFT DOMAIN FAQ

Everything players ask
before they pick a name.

A domain does not replace your Minecraft host. It is the friendly address that points to it—so you get the flexibility of your host and the polish of a name your community owns.

THE SIMPLE PATH

From idea to joinable
in four small steps.

  1. Search your name.Try the name your players will actually type and see it across premium and free endings.
  2. Claim the best fit.Use a free address to get started, or register a premium domain that stays with you.
  3. Point it at your server.Add the DNS records supplied by your Minecraft host. Most hosts provide a copy-and-paste guide.
  4. Share one clean address.Put it in Discord, your website, server lists, videos, and every announcement.
Do I need a domain to run a Minecraft server?+

No. Your host gives you an IP address, and that is enough to play. A domain simply makes that address easier to remember, more professional to share, and independent from a specific host.

What is the difference between an IP, a subdomain, and a domain?+

An IP is the technical location of the server, such as 185.214.122.67. A free subdomain is an address under someone else’s domain, such as yourserver.example.net. A registered domain, such as embercraft.com, is registered to you and can be pointed anywhere you choose.

Will a domain hide the Minecraft port for players?+

Usually, yes. An SRV DNS record can tell Minecraft which port to use behind the scenes. That lets players join with a clean address even when your server uses a port other than 25565.

Can I change my server host later?+

With a domain you own, yes. Change the DNS record to your new host’s IP and keep the same address in every Discord post, video, and bookmark. This is one of the biggest reasons public servers buy a domain.

Are free server addresses safe to use?+

They can be a very good option, especially for new and private servers. Read the provider’s terms and setup instructions, and remember that their parent domain and policies remain under their control.
